Karthik Subbaraj - Kollywood's Tarantino

Karthik Subbaraj - Kollywood's Tarantino
Madurai - Home to Madurai folks and Meenakshi Sundareshwar Temple also happens to be my native place. It was also the birthplace of a filmmaker named Karthik Subbaraj.

Karthik's father was also a supporting actor since his debut film. He was attracted to films because of his demigod - Superstar Rajinikanth.

Karthik Subbaraj directed short films and was also a contestant in a short film tv show Naalaya Iyakkunar. His short film gave him a lot of opportunities.

In 2012, he debuted as a feature filmmaker with Pizza, a horror comedy which introduced us to the Indie Star Vijay Sethupathi. His next film Jigarthanda was based on his life in Madurai. The gangster drama became critically acclaimed and won Bobby Simha a national award for best supporting actor.

He started a production company named stonebenchers. His debut production was bench talkies - an anthology of short films by many youngsters including Rathna Kumar. Aviyal also saw the debut of a Lokesh Kanagaraj who redefined Action Sequences.

He directed Iraivi, a film based on women emancipation. His filmmaking style in the movie had the likes of K. Balachander, Balu Mahendra and J. Mahendran.

He then made a silent film called Mercury featuring Prabhu Deva. His first 2019 release Petta saw him direct his demigod.
Karthik Subbaraj also introduced talents. He also directed films like Jagame Thanthiram and Mahaan which were released on OTT.

Karthik Subbaraj has redefined Tamil Cinema in a new way. If Ashiq Abu gave  Malayalam cinema a rebirth, Karthik Subbaraj has done the same for tamil cinema.

Karthik Subbaraj is indeed an amazing Filmmaker. I am waiting to see him back on the director's chair.
