Kollywood as of today

Kollywood as of today

In an essay about my take on Kollywood, I had mentioned that it is in a 2 way road with the frequently travelled route being Masala Movies and Stardom worshipping vehicles and the less travelled route being feel good, romantic stories and content backed movies. Now recently, I realized that Tamil cinema has witnessed a change in how it makes movies. The Masala movies that were made without any logic are starting to die out slowly and there is a chance the Masala Cinema could never rear its head again.

K-town recently witnessed a welcome change in Gautham Vasudev Menon's VTK which combined Coming of Age and Gangster backdrop elements. Musician Darbuka Siva made his filmmaking debut with a feel good 90s style love story through Mudhal Nee, Mudivum Nee which introduced newcomers. Pradeep Ranganathan made his second movie Love Today which brought out visual comedy. The Insta DM scene was a show stunner.

The Masala formula movies of today's time didn't have the logic it had way back. Ghilli directed by Dharani and starring Vijay and Trisha Krishnan was a logically made masala movie which I became an unabashed fan of. Today's formulaic mass movies were not that great. Ghilli's cult status made us realise that people don't make a film like this anymore.

I recently watched Good Night which spoke about Mild Sleep Apnea. It was treated as a wholesome feel good movie and that made me fall in love with this. Today's Tamil Cinema has started to change. We are waiting to see a New wave movement emerge in Kollywood just like the new wave movement of Malayalam cinema in the 2010s.
